I don't believe for a second it was you, not even after this morning. / But I DID change. / And the nightmare took place in a parking garage. Maybe that one. / But you were running away from something in your dream, right? Whatever that something was, it frightened you into changing. Maybe IT killed Beacham. But we can't find out here. / Chels, I'm going to need your help. |
I thought you said you would never PORTAL with me again. Besides, isn't this kind of like cheating in your business? / Look, this is the biggest story to happen to this state since Oklahoma City. Someone who gives a damn about real news needs to know what's going on. / Besides, I would hate the idea of Geraldo scooping me on my own turf. / Ooooh, look at Raven-girl getting all carnivorous. / Oh, shut up. |
Lt. Bailey, this is Special Agent Martel Harris with the FBI. He's been assigned to help us on the Beacham homicide. / Isn't that the detective? / I didn't know he was FBI. / It's a pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant. I only wish it was under better circumstances. / You, me and more than half the people in this state. / I heard you found something rather unusual mingled with the blood. / You could say that. / Wolf hairs. We found them on Johnston too. To be exact, they belong to an Oklahoma Grey Wolf, which has been extinct for nearly one hundred years. |
While authorities still investigate his death, let us take a look at the LIFE of Senator John Edward Beacham. / Born in 1945 in Norman, Beacham's family originally came to the state during the land runs in 1889. His great-great-grandfather, a former slave from Louisiana, settled in Boley, at the time all-black community. / Beacham followed in his father's footsteps by attending the University of Oklahoma School of Law. Upon graduation in 1971, he joined his father's small law office, leaving to pursue a political career in 1982. / Setting his sights high, Beacham made two unsuccessful bids for a seat in the stae senate before winning on his third try in 1986. There, Beacham quickly became known as a crusader for the underdog. / From his many bills to increase spending on education and housing to his career-long friendship with both leaders of the African-American and Native American communities, Beacham made his mark on the state of Oklahoma. / One of his biggest victories for Native Americans was helping establish thirteen areas in the state as sacred sites. / What set Senator Beacham apart from most of his collegues wasn't his heritage, his political savvy or his crusades. It was his direct, honest approach to people that earned him the respect of both advocates and critics alike. / You knew where you stood with Senator Beacham. While he and I butted heads many times on the senate floor, I still respected him for his straightforwardness. / In 2002, Beacham endorsed the construction of the "Mall of the Plains" outside Tulsa. While this action put him opposite some of his Native American allies, Beacham insisted that the mall would benefit many more than it would ever harm. / Nicknamed the "Uber-Mall", when complete it will be the third largest shopping mall in America. / In his last interview given, Beacham explained why he endorsed the mall. / We fought for the mall to be built in this area because of the possible revenue it would bring to the state as a whole, and to stimulate smaller local economies which have been hit hard in the past few years. / In essence, it will bring jobs to areas that need jobs. / Senator John Edward Beacham, dead at the age of 58. He will be sorely missed. |
You're certain these hairs came from an Oklahoma Gray Wolf? / Well, almost. / The samples found on Johnstons were identified as such. As we speak, we're testing some hair found on Beacham. On first analysis, it matches the Johnston hairs to a T. / I READ about the Johnston murder in a newspaper. At least there was no mention of wolf hairs. I take it you're keeping a tighter lid on this one? / Other than the maintenance personnel who discovered the body, some, NEWSCHICK bumbled in here before we could quarantine the area. We EXPLAINED the situation to her thoroughly. |
| |
I don't mean to belittle your department, Lt. Bailey, but I cannot stress enough how important it is that we keep this situation under control. From now on, no info goes out without my express say-so. Understand? / I can count on your FULL cooperation? / Uhhhh... / YEEEP! / HEY!! Who's back there? What's going on??!!! |
Are you okay?! What's wrong, Chelsea?! / I'm fine. It was a spider. / A SPIDER?! / I thought this place was secure?! How the hell did these two get in here?!! / It was secure, sir! / More NEWSCHICKS! That does it!! Arrest them BOTH and charge them with trespassing, disturbing a crime scene, and interfering with police procedure!! / No need for that, Lieutenant. I can take care of this. |
With a crime of this magnitude, it's only natural that curiosity would get the best of some people, especially NOSY television reporters. I think we can work something out. / I'm certain these two fine young ladies will understand that we must keep certain facts private. I'm just as certain they will agree to spread this message around to their colleagues in exchange for NO TIME SERVED. / Okay, let 'em go. / Just a second. I do have a question or two. / Just what the hell are you doing here? / Funny, we were going to ask you the same thing. |
A spider? That's what made you yell out? Heh, I'll have to kid Jacob about that. / I don't like spiders. Sorry, okay? / But a red dragon you just waltz up to and insult. / Red dragon? / It's a long story. / So, AGENT Harris, what exactly are YOU doing here? / I'm enjoying coffee and a Kolache with GOOD friends. / I meant... / I know what you meant, but it's the only answer I have for you. / I wish I COULD tell you more, but this isn't like it was with ELEANOR. She was under the radar. THIS is on CNN. / But... / The truth IS out there, Miss Svoboda, but so are things that will kill you without so much as a second thought. |
Jubal, have you ever thought about reality? / Like, I'm REAL and the rest of the world is just in my head? / Or we're in someone else's head. What if we're are all just characters in a play or a novel? / Or a comic. / Let's just suppose that were true for a second. If whoever created us suddenly stopped, then we'd no longer exist. We'd... all die. / What's REALLY scary about that theory is that it kind of makes sense. It would explain you losing your clothes all the time. / If that's true, I'll definitely have to have a talk with them. / When you do, tell them to give ME super powers. / I'll see what I can do. / Let this be a word to the wise. No matter if you happen to be made of flesh and blood, pen and paper, or a group of pixels on a computer screen, it's still nice to be appreciated. It's also a good idea for ME to return the favor. / "Thank you all for coming by." |
| |
No, Rae, I'm fine. You and Chelsea go out and do something tonight. I'll hold down the fort. I have another call coming in. Okay, bye, babe. / Hello, this is Julianne McIntyre. / Come to the forest that isn't there, now. THEY'LL be waiting. Don't tell anybody. / Who is this? / What forest are you talking about? Are you the old man who called about the senator? / Yes. Come to the Uber Mall site, now. |
Ever since Julie got PROMOTED, she's been Little Miss Dedication, which is great. Of course, more AIR TIME doesn't hurt. / You'll get your shot. / It's not that, exactly. I'm fine being behind the scenes, so to speak. I just hope Julie's newfound fame and power won't get her into trouble. / Speaking of trouble. Why don't you and I blow off some steam and get into some of our own. / Hmmm, yes. Trouble sounds like a good idea, but not the kind you had in mind. |
Hello? Is anyone there? I have the police on speed dial. Hello? / It's good to know you've got a back-up plan in case I was a serial killer. / Are you the gentleman who called me? / I suppose so. / I want you to meet my grandson, Danny. He's seen you on the television news. I think he has a soft spot for strawberry blondes. |
How did you know about Senator Beacham's murder? / Murder? / I haven't heard it called a murder. Did you hear that on the news? Besides, I didn't call you here to answer questions, but to tell you a story. / Land talks to us. It tells us who lived here before us and gives us a glimpse of their lives. / Sometimes, land talks to us and warns us to go away. |
You said THEY would be waiting. Who are THEY? / Before white men and black men came, they were here. / Before the Five Tribes were driven to this land, they were here. Before the Quapaw and the Osage called this place home, they were here. And long before Coronado searched for his lost city, they were here. / MANY call this land HOME, but it was theirs before anyone. / Now, THEY have returned. / / Vicky... I am truly sorry about John. / Thank you, Mart. It's been a long time. / Twenty years by my calendar. / I just wish you and John had... / I know. Me too. / Would you like something to eat? We have plenty. / I'm fine. / This is the first time I've been alone all day. The police have been as good as they can be. / I heard John really pushed for the mall. / He DID. / An old man, a professor at the university, asked John to let him search the mall site for any artifacts. Being the man he was, John let him do it. That's when things changed. / Did they find anything? / Yes, they did. / And I'll show it to you, but you have to promise me you'll get WHATEVER killed my husband. |
| |
They thought it was a dinosaur bone at first, it was so big. / John later found out it was a WOLF'S bone, the RADIUS, I think. / A wolf? / Yes. John petitioned to have work shut down on the mall in order to search for more bones, but the old man died before anything could be done. / A couple of weeks later, Bo Johnston, John's aide and friend, was killed. John had just been with him moments before. |
I'm going to g-guess they aren't... bears? / You would guess right. / They are SHAPESHIFTERS, and were the first to use the magick to be one with the world around them. Now, go and tell your people you have seen them. / This is THEIR land, and we are all in a battle. There have been grave losses. There need be no more. / My grandfather had to go. Can you take me to my house? |
Do you know where they found the bone? / Sorry. I've not been to the site. / Did... John ever believe his life was in danger BEFORE Mr. Johnston was murdered? / Before? No, but after Bo was killed he did confess to me that there was more to this than a simple homicide. Later, he performed a spell. It was the first one he had done in fifteen years. / The spell revealed an ANCIENT symbol in the palm of his hand. I'm not sure what it was, but it was then John got REALLY scared. |
If you'd like me to stay the night, I will. / I'll be fine. / It caught up with him, didn't it? That WORLD he was from. That dark and evil world finally killed him. / John could have been a powerful wizard by now, if he had kept his hands in it full time. He would not have even had to work that hard at it, like some people. / And he would still have been John. It's our choices that make us good or evil, not what WORLD we are born into. / / My gut feeling tells me there is something inside Beacham's office that will lead us to what really happened to him. Do you think you could get us inside? / I could portal us inside the building with a bit of concentration. Do you have a layout? / Sorry, Chelsea, I'm fresh out of government building schematics. / Wellll, I can get us close to his office, but I can't promise anythign. You see, I have to CREATE a portal to get in there. During the portal storm we went through existing portals, mostly. / What about the parking deck? / That's more or less an open space. It's easier with an open space. / You have to understand there are four basic types of portals; geographic portals, space-time portals, and time portals, and let me tell you time portals are a bitch to create. / The level of magick needed to go back in time is, well, quite a bit. Anyway, among those portals... / I don't need a lesson in WITCH physics. Just tell me how long it will take to get inside. / Not long at all. There's already one there. |
You said you found Danny with his grandfather? / Yes, Lieutenant. / My father DIED over a month ago. / I'm sorry, but this IS the man I spoke with at the mall site. He gave me a warning. The construction on the mall has to stop. / And why is that? / Well... |
| |
THREE WHAT?? / He showed me three... WEREWOLVES. I'm not sure if I believe it myself, but your... the old man said it was THEIR land. They were ancient... or something. Maybe it was their burial ground. / And maybe you saw LEPRECHANS, Miss McIntyre. I don't have time to play Tonto meets the Wolfman. / She's telling you the truth, son. You must do as she says or more will die, beginning with the girl herself. She has already been marked. / Pop? |
What do you mean there's a portal already there? / I don't know. There's a portal in the building. Maybe even in Beacham's office. Was he a wizard? / What? / You may have WIZARD politicians in YOUR world, but we sure as hell don't have them in MINE! / Are you certain? / Let's just go! |
That... that was the old man's voice! He said I was marked? Marked for what? I don't want to die like... I don't want to die, period. / No one's going to die. It was just Danny playing around. Right? / Nuh-uh. / This is just CRAZY! / You think? I'm in over my head too! / Okay, I'll have a unit take you home. / Thank you. |
This portal originates from here, and this IS Beacham's office. / That doesn't mean anything. / But the computer is gone. I was afraid of that. The police must have confiscated it already. / What did you hope to find here? / I don't know! My SPIDER SENSE told me to come here. Okay? / Is your SPIDER SENSE tingling now? I just found another portal. |
Another portal?! From this office? / Yes, and it's weird. It feels like... ELEANOR'S portal. Like it was a pocket dimension or some such. / It's called a HAVEN portal. Some wizards use them to get away from the madding crowd, so to speak. / They are especially useful when a wizard has a few secrets to hide. |
| |
Ma'am, the Lieutenant specifically ordered me to see you home safely. / I need to get my laptop from the station. You can tag along if you like. / So, if the Lieutenant doesn't believe my story, then why the escort home? / I don't know Ma'am. / Look, I need to call my boyfriend too. It'll only take five... / Rustle Rustle Rustle / Did you hear? / Yes, Ma'am. I did. / Arrrrrrhhhhh!!!!!! / Blam! Blam! Blam! |
Arrrrghhh!! / This -- this isn't happening. / Rrrrrrrrrr / Now I lay me down to sleep... / Wha -- ? |
Okay. Where are we now? / I seems to be the senator's private little haven. I guess he was practicing magick a bit more than his wife thought. / Well, I'll be damned. Aunt Isabella's house. / Do you know this place? / Indeed I do. |
John's grandmother and my grandmother were sisters. We both spent summers... er, well, not HERE, but I think you get the point. / They tore down the house in 1979, but by God, John's recreated it right down to the peeling paint. / Uncle Charlie never was much of a painter. / I'm glad this is bringing back fond memories for you, but we came here to look for clues. / In that case, it's time for a cookie! / Huh? |
Aunt Isabella made the best damned coconut cookies you ever put in your mouth. They were so good, she had to hide them from John and me. / But I think she knew we found them. / If John found anything of any importance, I'd stake my reputation he put it in here. / Okay, you found it. Now, what is it? |
