Thursday, September 15, 2011 Randy: Randy hears you've got one in the oven. / Cathy: I'm not a bakery. / Randy: A book on the shelf? / Cathy: Also not a library. / Randy: Randy wonders what your preferred metaphor is? / Cathy: "Pregnant." I state it plainly to keep him in touch with reality. / Dewey: "Jedi in training."
Friday, September 16, 2011 Panel 1 / Feynman, in front of an almost empty bookshelf. There are only two volumes in it, though we can't see what they are. / FEYNMAN: / Books? Don't read many of 'em all the way through, but here are two that I did finish. / Panel 2 / FEYNMAN (off): / This one I read in one sitting -- missed a party in my honor, but it was too damn good to put down.* / FEYNMAN (off): / It talks about how science really gets done. By actual people, making mistakes, sharing ideas, on purpose ... and sometimes, not. / Panel 3 / Watson and Crick in front of their model, per the famous photograph. But, this time with Rosalind Franklin with arms crossed off to the side. She looks stern. / FEYNMAN (off): / Working, failing, discovering. It's all there, along with ego, jealousy, ambition ... you know, the stuff of life. / FEYNMAN (off): / And science. / Panel 4 / Feynman, holding The Double Helix again. / FEYNMAN: / Watson's original title for his book was "Honest Jim". The publisher changed it, since 'honest' wasn't meant as a compliment. Jim didn't have trouble with that himself, but... / Panel 5 / FEYNMAN (off): / Anyway, this one is different. It's still full of great names, and it's *all* about dishonesty. / FEYNMAN (off): / I guess it's about science too, after a fashion -- the psychology of making / people fool themselves because of greed. / Panel 6 / Feynman, looking very pleased with himself, and the book, and the concept. / FEYNMAN: / But it's mostly about art. / FEYNMAN: / The art of stealing. / Panel 7 / The movie in question is The Sting, so the (excellent) poster for it is either the backdrop for Feynman talking (or draw him in as a character on the poster itself?). / FEYNMAN: / They based a movie on it later, but right after reading it myself I went / straight to Las Vegas to try and meet some of these characters.** / FEYNMAN: / And I did. It was in-ter-es-ting. / Panel 8 / Feynman is holding the books out towards us. / FEYNMAN: / So what are you waiting for. Read 'em both. / FEYNMAN: / You don't have anything better to do, right? / / Footnotes / * In what might have been his only blurb, Feynman is quoted on The Double Helix dustjacket as follows: "He has described admirably how it feels to have that frightening and beautiful experience of making a great scientific discovery." / ** Feynman probably didn't meet Larry the Lug, The Christ Kid, Limehouse Chappie, Crawfish Bob, 102nd Street George, Omaha Blackie, or Conk Jones in Vegas, but he did end up falling in with some gamblers.
