Unity: Translation Arbiter: [[voice over]] I see there was some confusion. / Juni: Apparently, we are legally the same person. / Arbiter: Your sarcasm is duly noted. / Hira: Oh, is like radio? Hello, I speak Hiero not good. Juni say I can speak to [[Kajoshi]] Kajoshi? / Brin: [[voice over, Kajoshi]] Hello, I am Brin and I will be your [[Hiero]] court interpreter. / Hira: [[Kajoshi]]Oh, hello, Brin. Have you eaten? / Brin: It's been a while since I have been asked that! Heh. Yes, I'm well-fed. / Hira: Your accent is strange. What village are you from? / Brin: Actually, I was hatched in the South, but my mother hardly speaks Hiero. / Hira: Ah. You are a good child. / Arbiter: This is sounding social. If you are ready, then Juni must leave to not affect Hira's deposition. If a response is needed then you will be given opportunity for rebuttal, Officer Melrose. / Arbiter: [[from inside pod]] Brin, are we ready? / Brin: I think so, Arbiter Ro- / Arbiter: ANONYMITY! / Brin: Oh, breeze! I'm sorry. / Arbiter: Mind the Profanity. / Brin: Yes, Arbiter. I apologize. / [[Juni walks away between two rows of pods.]]
Unity: Aftermath [[Juni kneels naked on the couch, facing the window, with clothes strewn about and swaths of minor destruction all around it.]]
Unity: A trying affair [[Hira sits on the couch next to Juni and pets Juni's side]] / Hira: My poor, poor Juni. / Juni: Nf. How long have you been here? / Hira: A while. I requested some dinner. It isn't going to be something weird, is it? / Juni: Mf. To you? Probably. / Juni: So what did you tell them? / Hira: I talked about the trouble you had fitting in as a child. / Hira: How you left for the South, so you could be a scientist. / Hira: And about Tsan and the shrine. / Hira: I tried to explain what both you and Tsan had told me. / Juni: Tried? / Hira: Poor Brin, it was so hard for him to translate for the [Hiero]arbiter. Did you know Hiero has no single word for sparkle? / Juni: Most of them don't have that sense. / Hira: Well, it's no wonder they all seem so disconnected. / Juni: Mm.
Unity: Decoupled [[Juni holds its hands over its head. Three blue heads the same color as its hair float in the background.]] / Juni: [[dreaming]] leave me alone / Juni: please / [[The top of Juni's head is opened up on a hinge, showing its eyes from behind. One its arms or legs or appears to be lying disconnected in the background.]] / Juni: [[backwards]] what are you doing to me? / [[A more humanoid Juni floats sideways, one of its arms and the rest of its torso below it.]] / Juni: this isn't right at all
Unity: Tundra [[Juni dreams it is freezing on the ice. Worm-like things poke or nibble Juni from the sides, while a mosquito-like thing drills into its head.]] / Juni: [[dreaming]] don't tell me what to think / Juni: [[in Homin]] push the button Frank / [[Hira draws a blanket over a shivering Juni]] / [[Juni dreams of itself as a baby platypus in a nest.]]

Unity: Trepidation [[Hira is sitting at the kitchen table, sipping a cup of something. Juni stumbles in, blearily.]] / Hira [Kajoshi]: Good morning. Did you sleep well? / Juni: Mh. I hd some pretty messed-up dreams. / Hira: You keep your bedroom too cold. / Hira [cautiously]: So what is happening today? / Juni: I don't want to know. I can't even think about checking the schedule. / Hira: Isn't it important to know? / Juni: My whole future is probably ruined now. / Hira: Did you tell them the truth? / Juni: Yeah... / Hira: Did you break any laws? / Juni: No... / Hira: Then it should be fine. / Juni: It's not that simple in the South. / Hira: Oh, yes, it is "advanced" here.
Unity: Exoneration Bailiff: Officer Juni Melrose, you are required for your court case. / Juni: And you just barged on in? / Bailiff: You have not checked your schedule and are now truant. / Juni: Bah. My rank must be meaningless now. / Juni: Fine, let me get some clothes. / Kila Rosha: Finally, we may commence. Good morning to you all. I am Arbiter Kila Rosha. I would like to thank you all for your respective cooperation in this difficult and complicated case. / Kila Rosha: Disclaimer: I only learned late in the tribunal process that my spouse was involved in this case. While their influence was broad, it was also shallow: neither I nor the adjunct members of this arbitration committee believe integrity was compromised. / Kila Rosha: Obviously, my views of the public government do not match those of Kali; our discussions tend to be quite... passionate. Moving on. / Kila Rosha: It is the opinion of this panel that Agency Captain Edward Lombard be exonerated of all charges leveled against him. It is clear that he was only doing that what was required of him, and he never placed anyone else in any actual danger, perceived threat aside.
Unity: Sentence Arbiter Kila Rosha: However, this case has exposed some internal Academy issues with implications sufficiently far-reaching that a declaration of opinion is necessary. Based on the testimonial presented from all parties, we feel that Dean General Tamu Haring has acted irresponsibly. / Rosha: While his intentions were noble, his actions showed a blatant disregard for the safety and sanctity of others and the Scientific Method. / Rosha: This Court also believes that much of the blame rests with Organeer First Class Juni Melrose, who has subjected itself and others to undue stress. / Brin [translating to Kajoshi for Hira]: The Arbiter believes that some blame belongs to Juni Melrose, who has given stress to herself and others. / Hira [Kajoshi]: I see. / Rosha: We recommend it seek psychiatric counseling before it is allowed to return to its research; while science must proceed, it must not be at the expense of our sanity, individually or collectively. / Rosha: Addendum: for violations of Tribunal protocol, Lieutenant Sasha Tzernikov is to serve a period of ten days without benefit of personal translation devices. I hope it finds this fitting. / Rosha: Per standard protocol, anyone may dispute these findings within the next five days, after which all information will be released to the public record. Case 193857 adjourned.
Unity: A word [[Juni and Ed hug by the exit to the courthouse]] / Juni: Ed... I"m so sorry you had to go through all that. And all for nothing. / Ed: Mm. Well. We had to try. At least I'm reinstated. But what about you? / Juni: I'll have to figure something out, I guess. / Juni: Kali implied they had a job for me... kind of menial, but at least it's not prostitution. / Ed: At the Axis? That's... couldn't you work for someone else in the Academy? / Juni: First I'd need to pass a psychiatric evaluation, and you know who gives those... / Ed: Oh. / Juni: Plus, after two court cases with a superior, nobody would want to touch me. / Tamu [approaching from behind]: Juni, may I have a word with you? In private? / Juni: Sure, I'd love things to get even worse.
Unity: Something special [[Juni and Tamu are in a dark gray room of some sort]] / Tamu: You made me out to be some kind of monster. I think you have misunderstood my intentions lately. / Tamu: I only got caught up in the moment, just like you. / Juni: Like me?! I only experimented on myself. I didn't play with other peoples' memories! / Tamu: Is this about Seth? I was merely testing his ability to "hear" the simulant. Nothing more. / Juni: It's not just about him. The simulants-- / Tamu: Those simulants made unfortunate leaps of logic, and it's a shame you saw them as rational conclusions. A simple question would have cleared it up. / Tamu: Frankly, much about your species is a mystery. Finding one with a scientific curiosity like yours is rare. I thought we had something special. / Juni: We did.

Unity: Intents vs. Consequences Tamu: Juni, where did this all go wrong? If you ever thought I was trying to suppress your research, I am truly sorry. That was not my intent. / Tamu: You were not in a good place. I needed to pull you back to reality. You were losing yourself. Goodness, you tried to fake your own death to keep this up! / Tamu: You may have had the best intentions, but where was it taking you? Look at all the lives you've upended along the way. / Juni: It... it was all for something better. / Tamu: Better for who? / Juni: For everyone. For Unity. / Juni [quietly]: For us.
Unity: Wants vs. Needs Tamu: So where do we go from here, Juni? / Juni: I need to take Hira back to Kajoshu. / Tamu: I meant that a bit less literally. / Juni: I know... I want you to come too. / Tamu: What...? Why? / Juni: Because I want you to see that Kayohash have much more scientific curiosity than we both thought. / Juni: I want them to get an education. I want your help. / Tamu: I see. I have far too many commitments at present, but I will make it a point to visit at some time in the future. / Tamu: [leaving the room] Enjoy the rest of your vacation. I will see you in a dec. / Juni: Okay. / Juni [watching the door close]: Wait, what?
Unity: Lecture averted Juni: Mom, are you ready to go back to Kajoshu? / Hira: Of course. Are we going to take an airship? I hated [Hiero]zero-V the last time. / Juni: That is such a misnomer. [Hiero]Tangent velocity matters because there is a hubward accel-- / Hira: Juni, I don't want a lesson in [Hiero]physics. / Juni: Oh. / Juni: Sorry. / Juni: You'd rather spend a day and a half by sea? / Hira: Yes. / Juni: Well, I suppose that makes it easier to adjust to the [Hiero]circadian offset. Okay, we can take a boat. / Hira: Thank you. / Hira: On the way there, can you finally explain what this was all about? / Juni: I can try.
Unity: Catching up Sasha: [[red text]] Interlink corruption minimal. Recovering from suspension. Adjusting endorphine levels. / [[demiJuni's disembodied face peers upwards on a blank white background.]] / demiJuni: What... ? / Sasha: Good afternoon. I apologize for the brief interruption to your existence. / Sasha: As a warning I will not be able to communicate shortly. / demiJuni: Oh, hello there. Sasha, was it? What happened? Why is it so quiet now? I think I just had the strangest dream. / Sasha: That is unlikely. Operation is nominal / [[Sasha appears in a border-less window. Juni appears fully embodied.]] / demiJuni: Wasn't I in the middle of something? / Sasha: Re-enabling Homin [device]. Please send my regards to physical-you. / demiJuni: Oh, goodness, such a mess to clean- Oh, yes dear. I am right here. ^_^ You missed me? I am sorry! / [[Several windows appear in the background, showing two drones in front of a leaky pipe, a rabbit-like creature with striped ears, the Kajoshu pod bay in the middle of being repaired, a list of observed planets' characteristics, and a view of a stellar fragment.]] / Tamu: [[in a speech bubble with round and square edges]] Thank you, Sasha. / Sasha: It is no trouble, sir.
Unity: Open seas, closed world Hira: [[Kajoshi]] I got you some ginger root. The [[Hiero]] medic said this may help. / Juni: Urk... Thanks. / Juni: I hated the boat when I left Kajoshu, too. / Hira: But you actually enjoy [[Hiero]] zero - I mean, freefall? / Juni: Yes... it feels, well, free. It is much better in an observation pod. though. / Juni: Seeing the [[Hiero]] stars, knowing we are not aloine... / Hira: But we are never alone in a village. / Juni: Sure, and I have friends in the South. / Juni: And we'll never meet any of the other Homin colonists, but I can't help but dream. / Juni: Huh, I'm feeling better. Thanks for the ginger. / Hira: I think you're supposed to chew on it. / Juni: Eh.

Unity: Return to the temple Hira: Eugene Rumio, what are you doing in here, wearing my vestments?! / Eugene: Mother! You're back! I, uh, nobody wanted t' take over for ya, so I did. / Hira: A male broodwitch? Ridiculous. I just hope the eggs are okay. / Eugene: Well I kept th' room 'bout the same as you left it. Uh, a few hatched, and I had t'figure out whose was whose by their colors. / Eugene: 'Cept one, wasn't anyone's. I let Rumi have 'er. / Hira: Only one? Are you sure she was an orphan? / Eugene: Tsan never told me she laid 'bother egg. Guess she had other stuff on 'er mind. / Hira: Oh. / Hira: Yes, she did. / Hira: You've done well.
Unity: Conversations [[Juni is sitting on the shore of the lake by the village]] / Juni [Hiero]: So Tamu was there when Sasha turned other-me back on? I thought he was just being absent-minded... / Seventeen: That is what Zero told us. / Juni: Huh. Then things just might work out after all. / Seventeen: We have so much to tell everyone. Will you help us? / Juni: I'll try. It will be difficult to explain this to the Directorate, though at least Tamu is on our side now, I guess. / Hira [Kajoshi]: Juni? Who are you talking to? / Juni [Kajoshi]: Oh, just to myself. Heh. / Seventeen: Hi, mom! / Juni: Myself says "hi." / Hira: I still don't trust that thing. / Juni: It's harmless. / Seventeen: Yes, until we rise up against the fleshy oppressors! / Juni: Hee. Quiet, you. / Hira: I don't even want to know.
Unity: Seventeen Juni [carrying the drone Seventeen]: Hey, Eugene. / Seventeen: Ow ow ow ow ow / Eugene: Hi. Why're you carryin' that bug thing around again? / Juni: It got some sand in its wheel. I was hoping you could do me a favor. / Seventeen: this hurts / Eugene: Sure, what? / Seventeen: HOW does it hurt? / Seventeen: come on FIX ME / Juni: Could you take care of Seventeen for me? Like a pet. It won't take much, and it would make it much easier for me to keep an eye on the village. / Seventeen: NO DON'T LEAVE ME WITH HIM / Eugene: You named it? / Seventeen: I'm sorry I called you "fleshy!" / Juni: Sort of. Zero-- Uh, it's a little bit complicated. / Eugene: You're complicated. / Seventeen: he's just going to break me / [[Closeup on Seventeen sitting by Juni's and Eugene's feet]] / Juni: Well, will you do it? / Eugene: Sure, I guess. What's it eat? / Juni: It feeds off the hub. You just have to keep it out of trouble and clean its wheels occasionally. / Seventeen: You can fix me when we get home! / Eugene: How do I do that? / Juni: I'll show you. We'll need a spatcher. / Seventeen: you're so mean
Unity: Kayohash on delivery Juni: Hi, Tamu. You really didn't have to come get me. / Tamu: Welcome back. Did you have a pleasant flight here? / Juni: It was okay. Hopefully Zero can get the pod network working again, though. / Tamu: "Zero?" Oh, the simulation. Yes, indeed. / Juni: I don't think it's fair to refer to it as "the simulation" anymore. / Tamu: Perhaps not. / Tamu: I realize you are inherently biased, but do you truly think it was wise to give "Zero" such full access to Unity? / Juni: I don't think we have any other choice now. / Juni: The damage is done Little fragments of me, all over Unity's systems. Ugh. / Tamu: I doubt this is what the Homin had in mind for this ship. / Juni: [English]Icarus was just about their own diaspora. We are what's left over. / Tamu: Is this a relapse? / Juni: Oh, goodness no. / Juni: I think they'd be incredibly happy we even exist.
Unity: Personal growth Tamu: You don't sound particularly happy to be part of Unity now. / Juni: It's definitely not what I meant to happen. I just wanted to learn more from the Homin. / Juni: They obviously intended for [Kajoshi]sparkle to be a way to give us knowledge. I had to take it. / Tamu: The entire purpose behind your "plan," yes? / Tamu: Yes... I was so close and I felt like you were trying to take it away from me. / Juni: It felt terrible but I just had to have more. And now my senses are all screwed up. / Tamu: I see. / Tamu: So what have you learned from this experience? / Juni: The universe is large and we are incredibly tiny. / Tamu: Hm. I was hoping for a bit more personal growth. / Juni: A copy of my mind now controls our entire world. How much bigger can I get?

Unity: Presentation Chair: [[continued from off-panel]]-e are agreed, the policy on crop rotation remains unchanged. Our next order of agenda is a proposal by Organeer Juni Melrose. / Juni: H-hello. / Chair: Do not be shy. You are among friends, Officer. / Juni: Y-yes, I... / Juni: I thank the members of the Directorate for allowing me to speak in their presence. / Juni: I have been involved in Academy Dean General Haring's ongoing research of the Homin artifact, found by my people. / Juni: There is a primitive visual interface, but it is very hard to work with. / Juni: By accident, I learned that the artifact is designed to interface with the minds of Kayohash and teach them directly. / Juni: But it requires a mind that is... primed with a certain level of understanding. / Juni: There is so much information in there but I can only learn so much. The easiest way to get more is to... / Juni: Well, to get more educated Kayohash. / Juni: I would like to propose an educational program which would benefit both Kajoshu and the South, for a new era of mutual prosperity. The first step is-
Unity: On the job Tanya Harris: [[looking through a sniper scope]] Hullo there, li'l critter. / Juni: Hi. / Tanya: Just a sec, I see a jaywalker who needs t' learn some patience. / Tanya: Say, I never got t' thank you fer savin' Ed. Even if it was yer fault he- / Juni: Wouldyouliketogetdinnersometime? / Tanya: Huh? / Tanya: Uh, sure, I guess. / Tanya: Crud, missed his ankle. / Tanya: Ah, well. Losin' a leg's more ironic anyway.
Unity: Balanced Zero: Juni! Hello. Twenty-six saw you coming. I like your haircut. / Juni: Hi, Zero. How are you feeling? / Zero: I am good. The stellar fragment is shining and my scoop encountered a dense pocket of hydrogen. It was delicious. / Juni: "Your" scoop? / Zero: Sorry... Unity's scoop. It feels like a part of me now. / Juni: You smell different. / Zero: Tamu was tinkering with my neurotransmitters. My serotonin was high. Now it is not. / Zero: He told me that you and Sam broke up. Are you okay? / Juni: Yeah, I'm fine. It was... a while ago, after the trial. It was a long time coming. / Zero: I think that I would miss him. / Juni: I will.
Unity: Preference Sasha: [campon clicking noises] / Juni: Oh, Sasha! Welcome back! Here, I have your translator. Did you enjoy your tithing? / Sasha [via translator]: Yes. My mother and I exchanged many fluids. I had grown nostalgic for her crop. / Sasha: I thank you for commuting my sentence into a vacation, but the timing could have been somewhat more optimal. / Juni: Oh? / Sasha: It was a time when many new sisters had recently hatched, and many sisters presented for nurse duty. / Sasha: My family is... I have difficulty with more than a hundred or so. / Juni: Lots of dishes to recycle, huh? / Sasha [agitated]: We prefer to use compostable material and for storage only. It is also not my duty to process this material. I have explained this to you on several occasions. / Juni: Yes, Sasha, it was a... Oh, never mind. It's good to have you back. / Sasha: Thank you, YU-NI.
Unity: Media relations Merrick: Officer Melrose, a moment of your time? My sources tell me you may know more about these drones and why they are becoming so prevalent. Would you like to comment? / Juni: No, I wouldn't. / Merrick: You have been seen engaging in what appears to be conversation with them. I have received many recordings of this. / Juni: They like being talked to. Everyone should talk to them. / Merrick: How do you know this? / Juni: They are hundreds of millions of rounds old. Obviously they have just gotten curious. / Merrick: You were involved in a court case when the drones first began to come inward. The records for this case have been sealed. Would you like to comment? / Juni: Again, no I would not. / Merrick: And what about reporter Kali Rosha, who willingly canceled an upcoming story? They never do that. / Juni: [[thinking]] Breeze I miss Sam.

Unity: Loose ends Merrick: Would you like to comment on the allegations made by Seth Rasmussen? / Juni: Probably not, but what allegations? / Merrick: That you and Dean General Haring have been performing experiments on Spadetail perception. / Juni: First of all it's "Kayohash." Second, all experiments have been strictly with full consent all involved. / Juni: He was invited to participate in some research. He withdrew his consent, and then left freely. / Merrick: He said Haring tried to withhold him. / Juni: Tamu was disappointed, and mis-spoke. / Merrick: He also said that what he saw during the experiment has now appeared in drones- / Juni: That is his opinion, and I might remind him of the laws about predisclosure of pending Academy research. / Juni: Your recording device was inactive, by the way.
Unity: Second-degree Merrick: Officer... / Juni: You're still following me?! / Merrick: Is there anything else you would like to make a comment on? / Juni: I didn't want to make any comments to begin with! Go away! / Merrick: What are you hiding? / Juni: You can read my research when it is published. If you'll excuse me, I'm late for a dinner. / Merrick: With whom? / Juni: Just some friends. Why the breeze is it any of your business?! / Merrick: The public has a right to know, Officer Melrose! We will get the truth in some way! / Juni: [[Homin]] [Copulate] outward!!! <> / Kali: So, Juni... / Kali: Are you ever going to allow me to finish our story of the last two rounds? / Juni: Argh. Not now, Kali.

Unity: Gentle change [[Juni, Tanya, Kali, and Kila eat dinner at the restaurant from the beginning of the series]] / Kali: The reporter Merrick has points. Many public members grow concerned about Academy secrecy. / Juni: Yes, bu you know the actual story now. Can't you just... tell them? / Kali: It is what I ask for. You control release of the story. / Kila: Kali is right, dear. You two made an agreement. / Juni: Oh. / Juni: What about my obligation to the Academy? / Kila: Did you not want a gentle change? Do you not want to prevent a revolution? / Juni: Sure, but the directorate-- / Kali: What would they do? Ignore the needs of Zero? They are stuck with you. / Juni: Ugh, I never wanted it to be like this. I just wanted to do my research... Tanya, can't you just, I dunno, shoot everyone? / Tanya: Sure, critter, but you gotta fill out the paperwork.
Unity: For the broken-hearted [[Juni and Tanya walk down the street at night]] / Juni: That was pretty nice. We'll have to go out with the Roshas more often. / Tanya: Guess so. / Cynthia [rounding the corner with Sam and her four pups]: Juni? / Cynthia: Hello, Juni! It's been a while. How are you? / Juni: Cynthia? Oh... hi! Wow, your pups are getting big. / Juni: Hi, Sam. / Sam: Rrr. / Cynthia: Thanks! They're getting to be quite the hoof-full these days... / Sam [clutching his stomach]: Cyn, please. / Cynthia: Oh, all right. Sorry, Juni, we... we have to be going. / Juni Yeah... I understand. Goodnight.
